United States of Care Praises American Families Plan Inclusion of Health Insurance Affordability Measure
$200B in Affordable Care Act Subsidies Will Keep Health Care Affordable on ACA Marketplace
(Washington, DC) President Biden’s American Families Plan, released today, would boost health insurance affordability and appropriate $200B to permanently provide health insurance subsidies to people who secure coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplaces. United States of Care Executive Director Emily Barson issued the following statement:
Earlier this year, United States of Care advocated for the extension of ACA subsidies as part of the American Rescue Plan. We applaud the White House for making the $200B in ACA subsidies permanent as part of the American Families Plan. Across our research and conversations, we know cost is the number one concern people have. People should have certainty that they can afford their health care as life changes. By making these subsidies permanent, we will ensure coverage is affordable and accessible for people.
It is critical — especially in the wake of the pandemic — that we fully examine our health care system to ensure all people have the access they need to virtual care, mental health services, and quality, affordable, and dependable health coverage as life changes.
We are pleased the Biden Administration has announced plans for a public health insurance option and for lowering the age of Medicare eligibility. A public option would create a high quality, dependable, affordable choice for health insurance and is extremely popular, with support from 54% of Republicans and the vast majority of Democrats. We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to do what we all know needs to be done — to build a better health care system that works for people.
