Politico Pulse: FIRST IN PULSE: US of Care Urges Employer Insurance Reform

Advocacy group United States of Care is calling on Congress to overhaul the nation’s expensive workplace insurance system, airing a series of concerns about it in a new report out today.

Among them, POLITICO’s Susannah Luthi reports: a push for greater scrutiny of the tax break that forms the system’s backbone but that costs roughly $240 billion a year, and a warning that workers are bearing an increasing share of the cost — with single-family premiums topping $20,000 in 2019. The pandemic, meanwhile, has highlighted the downside of linking American’s coverage to their jobs.

“Absent steps to limit costs, challenges facing the ESI market will grow more serious, with ramifications for both the private sector and governments at all levels as well as the nation’s workers,” US of Care argues in its report.
